"The Bahamas International Film Festival is a shining light among a large field of film festivals. I know. I've been attending festivals in Cannes, New York, in Breckenridge,Colorado, and elsewhere. Bahamas has an astonishing intimacy about it. Young filmmakers, many of them talented Bahamians, get to rub shoulders with movie stars and established filmmakers; contacts they might otherwise not have. It also brings the world to the Bahamas. It helps put Bahamas on the map among international film festivals; movie stars, directors, writers and other filmmakers have come to the festival and have spread the word. Just ask Sir Sean Connery, Johnny Depp, Nicolas Cage, Laurence Fishburne and other stars who've been honored or attended. It is a celebration of international artistic achievement in one of the most beautiful places on earth, and a vital part of The Bahamas' standing as a creative Mecca for all."

Director’s Statement

Being a fan of psychological thrillers, and trying to understand what causes "good" people to do "bad" things, is what started me on this journey. Being known mainly for writing and directing comedies, I wanted to find out for myself, and hopefully show others, that I was also capable of creating a darker story with complex, and "damaged" characters. Ones you don't usually find in the comedy genre.

Like every script I've written, I begin with a character (or characters) whose story I want to tell. With IS SOMEONE THERE? I wanted to delve into the idea of who truly is a victim and who is a monster. The answer isn't always black and white. And sometimes what we see, isn't always the truth.

As a director, this film was all about choreographing a "dance" between the two lead characters. Showing the audience just enough to keep their interest, but leaving them asking questions, and wanting to learn more. It was also extremely exciting for me to try and create an intelligent twist ending that felt deserved in the end.

For me, a short film can be a completed piece that stands on its own, or a taste of a bigger project yet to come. With IS SOMEONE THERE?, I set out to do both. I wanted to give the audience a fascinating story that had a beginning, middle and end, but one that left them excitedly questioning "what happens next?". I assembled an amazingly talented cast and crew because I wanted to show studios and financiers what a feature length thriller by Tim Garrick would not only be about, but also what it would look and sound like. I couldn't be more proud of all their efforts.
